Silver Vigil

There's a moment, just before dusk fully gives way to night , when the fields seem to hold their breath. The grass stops swaying. The air goes still. It's in that pause that I imagines this hare - caught mid-thought, ears raised, one eye fixed somewhere just past the edge of the page.

I wanted the drawing to feel less like a portrait and more like a memory: the moon hanging low and soft, scattered points of light drifting through the reeds like fireflies or seedheads caught on a breath of wind. The hare belongs to the grass as much as it stands apart from it - watchful, but not afraid. Vigilant but at peace.

Every line was built slowly in graphite, layer by layer, to get that quiet tension right - the softness of the fur against the shaper, upright ears: the stillness of the pose against the movement running throught the grass around it. It's a piece about noticing. About the animals that watch us long before we ever notice them.
