Welcome to the new Ren Lee Juju studio! I'm back in production at Clay Hand Studio in Fresno, showing new work at Art Hop, October 5.
My primitive clay juju figures are designed to hang on the wall and are potential 'fetish' figures, because they are vessels for whatever energies their owners give them: hopes, dreams, memories, goals, or power. This is an idea that has deep historical roots in primitive cultures going back to the earliest traces of human culture. Having endured the test of time, it is appropriate to explore the concept in contemporary terms. Each figure is an expression of what the clay 'wants' to become, is wrought with primary attention to the gestures in the clay itself, and brought to life in it's final firing. Each figure is a potential muse, fairy godmother, guardian angel, kindred spirit, or familiar. Your juju figure will contain whatever ideas and energies you choose to imbue. Welcome to juju world!
